This “Active Group 2” email is in addition to our monthly update that goes to the full list. It’s meant for members who want to take action and don’t mind more frequent messages (about once every 1–2 weeks). In this web version, some sensitive details may be omitted; the best way to stay fully informed is to
sign up for the email list.
Over the coming 60 days, there will be a LOT happening and a lot of need and opportunity to volunteer. These midterms will significantly determine the direction our country takes, and we need to activate as many people in our community as possible.
We’re all part of this group because, presumably, we care about defending democracy and building a better world. But if there were ever a time when being part of this group needs to mean more than being on its email list, it’s the next 60 days.
So, in that spirit, I need volunteers to personally reach out to other BTI members and invite them to volunteer and/or attend upcoming events. If you can help with that, please reply to this email.
If that’s not the role for you, tell me which of the events below you’ll be taking part in. There are lots of ways to contribute, and I’m asking everyone on this list to find one.
Democracy is a participation sport, and this list is for doers :)
- By September 21: our friends at Stand for Campus Freedom community have been closely following the federal government’s plan to weaponize the accreditation process to exert greater control over colleges and universities. The Department of Education has now released the full text of its far-reaching accreditation proposal, which would make unprecedented changes to the rules governing accreditation of colleges and universities, potentially beginning next year. These dangerous proposed rules would give the federal government sweeping new power to intrude on the independence and core functions of colleges and universities, affecting academic freedom and other core areas of campus policy and governance that shape the work of faculty, staff, students, and institutional leaders. - Take action to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians! Trump vowed to end the TPS program while making highly publicized, openly racist, hateful and false statements about Haitians and all immigrants. The Supreme Court just gave him the go-ahead. Urge Senators Schiff and Padilla to vote YES on Senate bill S4814, which would extend TPS for Haitians for the next three years until 2029.
